Nota 39. «Without doubt, the most significant debate in contemporary Catholic moral theology concerns the existence and grounding of moral norms. What might be called the revisionist approach, which often goes under the name of commensurate reason or proportionalism, has been proposed by many theologians from all parts of the world –Knauer, Janssens, Fuchs, Schüller, Böckle, McCormick, Chiavacci– With some modifications I have expressed general agreement with the direction of this movement. The whole movement shares a common recognition of the problem of physicalism which was present in the older Catholic moral theology.
This approach distinguishes between moral evil and physical evil (Knauer); moral evil and ontic evil (Janssens); moral evil and premoral evil (Fuchs). The basis for such distinctions, which are at the heart of the theories, is the unwillingness to identify the physical aspect of the act with the moral aspect of the act».
