As the dispute has developed, the new natural law theory has come to be associated less with Aquinas. It began as an account of the correct interpretation of Aquinas. With time, however, it became clear that in some respects it was irreconcilable with Aquinas. Eventually his thought came to be seen simply as the point of departure, and, one might add, a departure on a very distant journey.’’ Most glaringly, for instance, Aquinas unquestionably asserts a single final end for human beings, while the new natural law theory claims that there are several incommensurable ends.1 Nevertheless, the arguments of the new natural law theory will often bear upon our topic
